Practice Profile

We are an independant eyecare practice and contact lens centre located in York. Our purpose built practice was established in 1952. Thorough private and NHS eye examinations are carried out by owner Optometrist partners Jonathan Binnington, BSc(Hons)MCOptom and Nigel Thurling, BSc(Hons)MCOptom. They are backed by dispensing optician Elaine Scarratt, FBDO, who is also the practice manager.


As independent opticians we are free to access the best frames from many manufacturers, from traditional styles to the latest designer ranges suiting all tastes and pockets.

Also thinner, lighter single vision, bifocal and varifocal spectacles are available.

All contact lens types are fitted including disposable, extended wear (wear them night and day) silicone hydrogel and multifocal.

Binnington & Thurling History
The Practice was established by Arthur Humphrey's in 1952 located in York City Centre.
It relocated to Micklegate in the late 1960's.

In the early 1970's John Binnington joined the practice and was later followed in 1990 by Jonathan Binnington.

In 1997 Nigel Thurling became a partner and in 1998 the practice changed to the current name of Binnington & Thurling.

The changes over the past 50 years
Spectacles have become fashion items and the stigma associated with them has vanished.

We have seen a vast improvement in frame and lens technology enabling clearer vision in lighter, more comfortable spectacles. Many eye conditions can be detected and treated much earlier now encouraging more people to take examinations.

Contact lenses have changed enormously too since the practice starting fitting them in the early 70's. Since then we have seen a great improvement in the products available to our patients including Daily disposable, lenses you can sleep in and bifocal/varifocal types recently introduced.

We listen to our patients needs and provide them with their requirements.

The recent changes at Binnington & Thurling
Despite our success we haven't stood still - full computerisation, modern fully refitted interior with air-conditioning for patient comfort.

We have moved with the times, as independents we can react quickly to a changing market place.
